I was led down my path of becoming a neurosurgeon by my passion for the nervous system and neural networks. I love the mechanical aspects of operating as well as connecting with and supporting patients through their unique healthcare journeys. On a daily basis, I am extremely grateful that I have the opportunity to improve patients’ qualities of life. I practice general neurosurgery with a focus in minimally invasive spine surgery and perform cranial, spinal, and peripheral nerve surgeries. In meeting with my patients for the first time, I will perform a comprehensive evaluation, and we will discuss treatment options. I always want to provide compassionate, thorough patient care, and it is important to me that we take as much time as we need to talk and decide the best treatment option for you, together.
I was proudly born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Yale University, and went on to earn my medical degree and complete my residency from the University of Michigan. From there, I traveled to Memphis, Tennessee to complete my fellowship in minimally invasive spine surgery with Dr. Kevin Foley at Semmes Murphey Clinic. I am currently pursuing my most recent educational opportunity, as I was accepted by the Congress of Neurological Surgeons leadership institute to participate in the Vanguard Leadership in Healthcare course. This year-long course empowers neurosurgeons to gain the skills and knowledge to become effective and impactful leaders.
I am board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery, and am a member of many medical associations including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, Michigan Association of Neurological Surgeons, Detroit Medical Society, and the American Society of Black Neurosurgeons (of which I am a founding member and Vice President). Some of my proudest achievements include becoming the Chief of Neurosurgery at Harper University Hospital, the Interim Chair of Neurosurgery at Wayne State University School of Medicine, and, with my now-retired partner, writing the first textbook on the surgical treatment of the sacroiliac joint. I love taking a team-based approach to patient care, participating in professional camaraderie and relationship building, and mentoring students and residents.
My family is very important to me; I am family-oriented and hold my family close to my heart. I have one older brother, and my mother raised us both as a single mother in Detroit. My mother now lives with me, and I am so proud to provide her with a home just as she provided for my brother and me. My love for animals sparked my interest in medicine; I wanted to be a veterinarian when I was younger! I have a weimaraner, a bengal cat, and an African grey parrot. I love traveling and eating meals that speak to the soul, and I participate in mind-centering activities such as yoga, pilates, and transcendental meditation. It is important to me to remain grounded in order to provide the best care possible to patients.
Being a neurosurgeon is the foundation of who I am, but it is not the culmination. I believe that I am here, serving Detroit for the purpose of a greater good that stretches beyond solely curing neurological disease. I am committed to eliminating health inequities in our community and improving the quality of healthcare for all in Detroit. The future of medicine is exciting; the opportunities for technological growth and fostering human connections are stimulating to me. I am electrified knowing that I will constantly be challenged and continuously learning throughout my career.
