Dr. Akin Akinwande earned his initial medical degree from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria in 1984. He was a state scholar and graduated with Honors. He soon immigrated to United States of America to undergo postgraduate and specialist training. Dr. Akinwande completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the State University of New York Health Science Center and Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. Dr. Akinwande then completed a cardiology fellowship at the University of Wisconsin Hospital- Madison and an Advanced Cardiology Fellowship the Deborah Heart and Lung Hospital in New Jersey.
Upon successful completion of his medical education, Dr. Akinwande practiced cardiology and held leadership positions such as Chief of Cardiology at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Fargo, North Dakota and as Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University Of North Dakota School Of Medicine. He later joined a team of experts at Geisinger Heart Institute in Danville, Pennsylvania. Moving to Indianapolis, he became a partner with Indiana Heart Physicians in association with St. Francis Heart Center where he founded and was Medical Director of the Midwest Valve Center. Dr. Akinwande is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Physicians and the American College of Chest Physicians. He is a member of the Aesculapian Medical Society and the Association of Black Cardiologists. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease and Nuclear Cardiology.
In 2009, Dr. Akinwande established Pinnacle Heart Specialists where he currently practices. Dr. Akinwande is highly respected and a leader in the Indianapolis and cardiovascular community worldwide. Dr. Akinwande is well researched and has published extensively in multiple cardiovascular journals. Dr. Akinwande is a lecturer to Family Practice residents at Indiana University and a mentor to the residents that rotate at Pinnacle Heart Specialists. He is also Cardiology Course lecturer and adjunct Professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine and Master of Physician Studies Program. Dr. Akinwande serves on the Speaker Bureau Program for many pharmaceutical companies. He has been named as one of Indianapolis Top Doctors in Cardiology by Indianapolis Monthly for the past ten consecutive years.
Dr. Akinwande serves on the advisory boards of multiple organizations including the Indianapolis local chapters of American Heart Association and NAACP to mention a few.
